Safety Requirements By Event Type

Gear requirements vary significantly by event type and sanctioning body. The table below gives a quick overview. Browse our full Safety category and Seats category — we stock gear for every level from beginner HPDE through SCCA endurance racing.

“Always verify your event’s specific safety requirements with the organizer before purchasing gear. Sanctioning bodies update their rulebooks annually.”

Helmets: Certifications Explained

The most important piece of safety equipment is your helmet. Browse our helmet selection — all SA-rated options are legal for HPDE, time trials, and most club racing events. Current Snell SA2020 and SA2025 certified helmets are the baseline requirement at nearly all events. Motorcycle helmets with DOT or ECE ratings are not permitted.

FIA 8860 and 8859 standards are the international equivalent and are accepted by most sanctioning bodies. Brands like Bell, Arai, and Sparco helmets in our safety category deliver strong protection at every price point. For HPDE use, a quality entry-level SA2020 helmet is entirely appropriate — you do not need a $3,000 composite helmet to drive safely.

HANS & FHR Devices: Neck Protection

A HANS or FHR device is one of the most important safety advances in motorsport history. In a frontal impact, it limits head motion and dramatically reduces the risk of basilar skull fractures. These devices are now required at most SCCA, Lucky Dog, and Chump Car events and are strongly recommended at any time trial event where you use a multi-point harness. Important: a HANS device must always be used with a harness — not a factory seatbelt.

Racing Harnesses & Seats

Multi-point racing harnesses hold the driver more securely during cornering and impact. They should be used alongside a proper fixed-back racing seat — using a harness with a stock seat that can deform in an impact can actually be more dangerous in certain crash scenarios.

Racing seats from Sparco, OMP, and Corbeau in our seats category are designed as part of a complete safety system. Fixed-back seats mount to the floor at precise angles, distribute impact forces more evenly, and incorporate side bolstering that reduces lateral movement in cornering. For HPDE use, a reclinable racing seat is a popular entry point that installs easily and improves both ergonomics and safety.

Fire Extinguishers & Driving Suits

A bracket-mounted fire extinguisher is required at most events beyond beginner HPDE and should be considered essential regardless of rules. For endurance racing, plumbed-in fire suppression systems are the standard.

Driving suits are required at most sanctioned racing events. Our apparel and safety categories stock SFI-rated suits from leading brands — single-layer options for club racing and multi-layer constructions for endurance use. We also carry driving gloves and other motorsport apparel to complete your kit.

Pre-Event Safety Gear Checklist

  • Verify yourhelmet’s Snell or FIA certificationis current and accepted by the event’s rulebook.
  • Inspect helmet liner and shell for cracks or damage from previous use.
  • Confirm yourharness date codeis within the event’s age limit (most require belts within 5 years of manufacture).
  • Test the harness release mechanism — it should operate smoothly with one hand.
  • Confirmfire extinguisheris fully charged and securely mounted.
  • If using a HANS device, confirm tether attachment and correct helmet slot size.
  • Checkracing seatmounting hardware for tightness — seat mounts see tremendous side load in cornering.
