The K&N Typhoon intake (part 69-8006TTK) is a complete cold-air induction kit for the 2.0L H4 turbocharged engine in the 2015 to 2017 Subaru WRX. It removes the factory air box and stock intake tube and replaces them with a mandrel-bent aluminum tube in textured black, fitted with an oversized, washable oiled-cotton filter. The manufacturer states the system is guaranteed to add horsepower and torque and gives an estimated gain of 9.16 hp at 4800 RPM.
Compared with the stock airbox, this kit routes intake air through a smoother, straighter path into the turbo inlet, which is the reasoning behind the manufacturer's airflow claims. Compared with disposable paper elements, the cone-shaped filter can go up to 100,000 miles between cleanings under normal highway driving, and it is covered by K&N's No-Hassle Lifetime Limited Warranty. Enthusiasts shopping for a 2015 WRX cold air intake, a WRX 2.0L H4 turbo intake upgrade, or a mandrel-bent aluminum intake tube for a WRX will find the design built around the stock mass air sensor and turbo inlet hose rather than a generic universal tube.
The manufacturer lists this kit for the 2015 to 2017 WRX with the 2.0L H4 turbo engine. The mass air sensor is not discarded; the install sheet relocates it into the K&N intake housing, and a heat shield takes the place of the original box space. Buyers searching for a WRX heat shield intake, a Typhoon cold air intake for the 2.0L turbo, or a WRX intake with MAF sensor relocation are looking for exactly this layout.
The manufacturer lists this kit for the 2015 to 2017 Subaru WRX with the 2.0L H4 turbo engine. Fitment outside that range has not been confirmed by the manufacturer, so verify with the manufacturer before ordering.
Yes. The manufacturer's installation instructions have you remove the sensor from the factory housing and install it into the K&N intake housing using the included hardware.
The manufacturer states the filter only needs cleaning about every 100,000 miles under normal highway driving conditions. It is washable and reusable rather than a disposable element.
The manufacturer's instruction sheet begins by turning off the ignition and disconnecting the negative battery cable, which erases pre-programmed electronic memories, so note your radio presets and anti-theft code first. The steps then cover mounting the heat shield, relocating the mass air sensor, attaching the tube bracket, clamping the turbo inlet hose, fitting the edge trim, and reinstalling the fresh air intake scoop. The kit includes 6mm bolts, nylock nuts, washers, and a 48-inch edge trim, and the manufacturer warns against skipping the provided hardware. The manufacturer rates a typical installation at 60 minutes or less using simple hand tools, though expect some patience with the heat shield and trim routing.
