It's inexpensive, it's a simple install on many cars, and the product pages promise cooler running. So is a low-temp thermostat worth it, or is it a band-aid?

The honest answer is that it depends on what's causing the heat. A thermostat controls when coolant starts flowing to the radiator. It doesn't make the radiator bigger. This guide explains what a thermostat does, what "racing" and "low-temp" mean using Mishimoto's published opening temperatures, what a lower-temp thermostat can and can't fix on track, and how to decide for your car. Every temperature below comes from Mishimoto's own spec tables.

Shop Mishimoto racing thermostats at Track Ready Products: direct-fit thermostats for Miata, S2000, 350Z/370Z, BMW E36 and F8X M3/M4, Mustang, WRX/STI, Civic Si and more. Browse thermostats · Browse Mishimoto · Browse radiators

Never open a hot cooling system. Removing a radiator or expansion-tank cap on a hot engine can spray scalding coolant. Let the engine cool completely before you drain coolant or remove the thermostat housing, and dispose of old coolant properly.

What a Thermostat Actually Does

A thermostat is a temperature-controlled valve between the engine and the radiator. When the engine is cold, it stays closed so coolant circulates inside the engine and warms up quickly. As coolant reaches the thermostat's opening temperature, the valve starts to open and lets coolant flow to the radiator to shed heat. As temperature rises further, it opens fully.

That gives you two important numbers for any thermostat: when it starts to open, and when it's fully open. Mishimoto calls the first one the "activation temperature" in its spec tables.

Here's the part that matters on track. Once a thermostat is fully open, it's no longer controlling much. Coolant is flowing to the radiator as freely as the thermostat allows, and the temperature from then on depends on how much heat the engine makes and how much the radiator, fan and airflow can remove. A thermostat sets the temperature the system aims for. It doesn't set how much heat the system can reject.

What "Racing" or "Low-Temp" Means

A racing or low-temperature thermostat opens at a lower temperature than the factory part. Mishimoto describes it this way: "Once the engine is fully warmed up the Mishimoto racing thermostat will open up at a lower temperature than standard thermostats, also allowing the coolant to flow through the engine sooner thus reducing and maintaining cooler engine temperatures."

How much lower depends on the car. Some of Mishimoto's published figures:

Honda S2000, Nissan 370Z, Subaru WRX/STI (01–07 listing): Mishimoto activation 154.4°F vs OEM 172.4°F

Mazda Miata NB (99–05): Mishimoto 177°F vs OEM 195°F

BMW E36: Mishimoto 154.4°F vs OEM 190°F

BMW M3/M4 F8X: Mishimoto 212°F vs OEM 221°F

Honda Civic Type R (2017+): Mishimoto says its thermostat "begins to open 10°C earlier than the stock thermostat at 68°C (154.4°F) and is fully open 7°C earlier than stock at 83°C (181.4°F)"

The M3/M4 example shows that "racing thermostat" doesn't always mean a big drop. On that car the change is single digits in °F, because the engine is designed to run a specific temperature.

154.4°FMishimoto activation, S2000 / 370Z / WRX

177°FMishimoto activation, Miata NB

212°FMishimoto activation, M3/M4 F8X

83°CType R Mishimoto fully open, 7°C earlier than stock

What a Low-Temp Thermostat Can Help on Track

A lower opening temperature gets coolant moving to the radiator earlier, so the system starts shedding heat sooner. Mishimoto says this "reduces and maintains lower engine temperatures," and positions its low-temp units for "warmer climates, on vehicles making more power than stock, or under extreme towing/driving conditions." Its Mustang page specifically calls out "hot days at the drag strip or road course."

In practice, that can help in a few situations:

Short, intense sessions where temps rise quickly. Opening earlier gives the system a head start on heat rejection before things get hot.

Hot-weather track days. You start each session closer to the edge, so starting the cooling earlier gives you more margin.

Modified cars. Mishimoto's pages say its racing thermostats are designed to "significantly lower high engine temperature produced by modified and upgraded turbo applications."

Pairing with a radiator upgrade. Mishimoto suggests pairing its thermostat with a performance aluminum radiator. A lower-opening thermostat plus more radiator capacity work together.

What It Can't Fix

Mishimoto is clear about the limits. Its Civic Type R page says: "This thermostat will not improve the performance of a clogged, damaged, leaking, or under-equipped cooling system." Mishimoto recommends following your vehicle's scheduled cooling-system maintenance and installing a radiator suited to your needs.

That lines up with the physics. If your car's temperature keeps climbing every lap on a long session, the thermostat has likely been fully open for a while, so a lower-opening one won't stop the climb. Use what's in the box rather than reusing an old seal.

Match the orientation. Note how the factory thermostat came out and follow the kit or service manual instructions for your car. An upside-down or misaligned thermostat can cause the very temperature problems you're trying to fix.

Refill with the right coolant. Use the coolant type and mix your car's manufacturer specifies, unless your race organizer requires something else. Check your rulebook if you race.

Bleed it properly. Air pockets after a coolant change are one of the most common causes of temperature spikes on track. Use your car's factory bleed procedure, and recheck the level once the engine has cooled after the first drive.

Watch your gauges on the first session. Ideally use a real coolant temperature readout, not just the dashboard needle. Some factory gauges read steadily across a range and won't show the difference.

Is a Racing Thermostat Worth It for Your Car?

A racing thermostat makes sense if:

Your cooling system is healthy, bled and maintained

Temps rise quickly early in a session, or you track in hot weather

Your car is modified and makes more heat than stock

You're also upgrading the radiator or already have one

Fix these first if:

Temps keep climbing lap after lap with no plateau

You've seen bubbles, lost coolant or a cap that won't hold pressure

Your oil temps are high while coolant is normal

Airflow is blocked or the undertray is missing

Stick with the factory thermostat if:

The car is a daily driver in a cold climate and only sees the odd track day

Your temps already stabilize fine on track

Your engine is designed to run a specific temperature and the racing part changes little (check the numbers for your car)

You'd rather spend first on radiator capacity or an oil cooler

If you're in between: add a real coolant gauge, log a session, and look at the trend. Start with our CSF radiator and oil cooler guides.

Common Questions

Does a racing thermostat lower engine temperature?

It changes when coolant starts flowing to the radiator. Mishimoto says its racing thermostats open at a lower temperature than stock, "allowing the coolant to flow through the engine sooner thus reducing and maintaining cooler engine temperatures." Once the thermostat is fully open, though, your temperature depends on radiator capacity, airflow and heat load.

What are the pros and cons of a low-temp thermostat?

The pros: coolant reaches the radiator earlier, which can buy margin on hot days and on modified cars. The cons: it can't add cooling capacity, it won't fix air, leaks or a bad cap, and on some cars the change from stock is small. Mishimoto itself says it won't improve a clogged, damaged, leaking or under-equipped system.

Will a racing thermostat stop my car from overheating on track?

Not if the cooling system is under-sized or has a fault. If your temps climb every lap without leveling off, the thermostat is probably already fully open. Diagnose airflow, air in the system, the cap and oil temperature first, using our overheating guide. Then decide between a thermostat, a radiator or an oil cooler.

Racing thermostat vs OEM: what's the difference?

The main difference is the opening temperature. Mishimoto lists 154.4°F vs 172.4°F OEM for cars like the S2000, 370Z and WRX, 177°F vs 195°F for the Miata NB, and 212°F vs 221°F for the F8X M3/M4. Mishimoto's thermostats are direct replacements for the stock part on their listed applications.

Should I install a racing thermostat with a new radiator?

It's a common pairing, and Mishimoto suggests it on several product pages. A bigger or more efficient radiator adds heat-rejection capacity, and a lower-opening thermostat sends coolant to it sooner. Since you'll drain and refill coolant for a radiator swap anyway, adding the thermostat at the same time saves a second bleed.

Is a racing thermostat OK for a daily driver?

Mishimoto sells them as street and track parts. Its Miata NB thermostat is described as "the perfect addition to your street or track Miata." In cold weather, an engine with a lower-opening thermostat may run cooler than the factory part intended. If the car is mostly a winter daily, weigh that before you swap.

Shop Mishimoto Racing Thermostats at Track Ready Products

Browse Mishimoto racing thermostats by car, or text us your car, mods and the temps you're seeing on track at (949) 954-3322 and we'll help you decide between a thermostat, a radiator or an oil cooler.

          Browse thermostats
          Browse Mishimoto
          Browse radiators
          Browse oil coolers

Navigation

Back to the CSF radiators hub

        Shop thermostats

At a Glance

ChangesWhen coolant reaches the radiator

Doesn't addRadiator capacity

Typical drop18°F on many listings (Mishimoto)

Fix firstAir, cap, airflow, oil temp

In This Article

What It Does

What Low-Temp Means

What It Can Help

What It Can't Fix

Opening Temps by Car

Install and Bleeding

Is It Worth It

FAQ

Related Articles

Track Guide

Why Your Car Overheats on Track

Tech Guide

              CSF Radiators Explained

Comparison

              CSF vs Mishimoto Radiators

Track Guide

              Oil Cooler for Track Days

A racing thermostat is one of the first parts people find when their coolant temps start creeping on track.
