Braided lines get recommended in every forum thread. But what do they actually change, and what can't they fix?

This guide explains what a brake hose does, how braided stainless lines differ from factory rubber, what Wilwood says its Flexlines improve, and where lines sit in the order of brake upgrades. We also cover fittings, torque and bleeding from Wilwood's own instructions. Wilwood is the line brand Track Ready Products stocks, so that's whose claims we quote. If you're not confident with flare-nut wrenches, torque specs and a full bleed, have a professional do it. Always pressure-check for leaks and confirm a firm pedal before driving, and never take a car on track the same day you discover a leak.

What a Brake Hose Does and Why It Matters on Track

Most of your car's brake plumbing is rigid metal hard line. At each wheel, though, the line has to flex so the suspension can move and the front wheels can steer. That flexible section is the brake hose, and on most cars it's rubber from the factory.

When you press the pedal, the master cylinder pushes fluid through the system to the calipers. Every part of that system that can stretch, compress or expand under pressure soaks up a little of the pedal stroke before the pads clamp the rotor. Engineers call this hydraulic compliance. Air in the fluid, soft caliper mounts and flexible hoses all add to it.

On the street you rarely use enough pressure for long enough to notice. On track you brake hard from high speed, repeatedly, with heat building in the whole system. Small amounts of give become a pedal that feels softer or less consistent than you'd like. Removing compliance is the whole point of braided lines.

Rubber vs Braided Stainless Steel

A factory rubber brake hose is built to flex with the suspension and to stay safe for years of street use. Its outer layer is rubber, which can bulge slightly under high pressure.

A braided stainless line, like Wilwood's Flexline, wraps the inner hose in a woven stainless steel braid. The braid resists the hose expanding under pressure. Wilwood's OEM replacement kits also add "a durable black PVC cover to protect against abrasion," which keeps the braid from rubbing on nearby parts.

Other differences worth knowing:

Fittings. Wilwood Flexline is offered in -3 and -4 AN sizes, terminated with "various inverted flare, metric, banjo, and AN ends" to connect calipers to hard lines.

Vehicle-specific kits. Wilwood's OEM Factory Replacement Flexline Kits are "engineered as direct-fit replacements for factory brake systems."

Caliper match. Many Wilwood kits are built for Wilwood calipers. Wilwood notes that "new lines are often required because of fitting differences between Wilwood and factory calipers."

That last point matters when you shop. Many TRP Flexline listings name a caliper in the title, such as "w/ Forged Dynalite" or "w/ SL6." Those kits are for that caliper, not the factory one.

What Wilwood Says Flexlines Change

Wilwood is direct about the benefit. From its line-kit pages:

Flexlines "provide an improved brake pedal feel compared to original rubber lines."

On its OEM replacement kits, Wilwood says the lines "enhance braking performance by minimizing line expansion under pressure. The result is improved pedal firmness, quicker response, and greater overall control during braking."

The kits are built to "reduce hydraulic system compliance for a more consistent braking feel."

And for its own brake systems: "Wilwood recommends replacing rubber brake lines."

Notice what's in that list: pedal feel, firmness, response and consistency. Notice what's not: shorter stopping distances, more friction or less fade. Lines change how the pedal feels and how consistently pressure reaches the caliper. They don't change how much grip your pads or tires have.

-3 / -4 ANWilwood Flexline sizes

2 washersCopper crush washers per banjo fitting

96–120 in-lbsBanjo bolt torque, max 144 in-lbs

No sealantOn 37° AN flare joints

What Brake Lines Can't Fix

Braided lines are a good upgrade, but they get blamed and credited for problems they don't cause. Before you buy, rule these out.

Boiled fluid. If your pedal goes long during a session and comes back after cooling, the usual cause is brake fluid that's boiled or absorbed moisture, not hoses. New lines won't fix that. Read best brake fluid for track days and flush with a high-temperature fluid first.

Pad fade. If the pedal stays firm but the car doesn't slow, that's the pad running out of friction at temperature. A pad built for track heat fixes that. See PowerStop Track Day vs Track Day SPEC.

Air in the system. A soft pedal from the first stop usually means air. Bleed it properly.

Knockback and bearing play. A pedal that's long only on the first stop after a corner can come from pads being pushed back in the caliper. Have a shop check wheel bearings and hub play.

Poor bed-in. Uneven pad deposits cause judder, not a soft pedal. The key steps, in Wilwood's words where possible:

Pipe thread (NPT) fittings at the caliper. NPT threads are tapered and seal by interference, so "PTFE pipe thread sealing tape MUST be used on the male threads." Wilwood says to start two threads from the end, wrap the tape twice clockwise (viewed from the open end), hand-tighten, then tighten another 1.5 to 3 turns with a wrench, and check for leaks after pressure is applied.

AN fittings. The seal is the 37° cone against the 37° flare, so "no thread sealant is required." Hand-tighten until the cone and flare seat, then snug with a wrench, being careful not to over-tighten.

Banjo fittings. These seal with two copper crush washers, one on each side of the banjo. For Wilwood banjo fittings, Wilwood says to tighten the banjo bolt to 96–120 in-lbs and not exceed 144 in-lbs. Torque to the lighter spec and check for leakage, increasing torque only to stop a leak.

Chassis fittings. Secure the chassis fitting with the retaining clip, and use two wrenches, one to hold and one to tighten. Wilwood says to use a proper flare-nut wrench to avoid damaging the hard-line fitting.

OEM-replacement kits. For direct-fit kits that bolt to factory calipers, don't assume the Wilwood figures above apply. Follow the instructions included with the kit and your vehicle's factory service manual for torque specs.

Then bleed. Opening the lines lets air in, so a full bleed is part of the job. It's also the perfect time to flush in a high-temperature fluid. Check the routing at full lock and full suspension travel so nothing rubs or stretches, then pressure-check every joint for leaks before you drive.

Who Should Upgrade

Upgrade to braided lines now if:

Your fluid is fresh and high-temp, and you're already on track pads

The pedal feels firm when cold but less consistent late in a session

Your factory hoses are old or due for replacement anyway

You're installing Wilwood calipers, which often need new lines anyway

Fix these first if:

The pedal goes long and comes back after cooling (fluid)

The pedal stays firm but braking power drops (pads)

The pedal is soft from the first stop (air in the system)

You have judder rather than a soft pedal (bed-in or rotors)

Stick with factory rubber for now if:

The car is a street car with no track days planned

Your factory hoses are in good condition and the pedal feels right

You'd rather spend first on fluid and pads

You don't want to open the hydraulic system yet

If you're in between: if you're replacing aging hoses anyway, braided lines cost you little extra effort since you'll bleed the system either way. Wilwood says its braided Flexlines "provide an improved brake pedal feel compared to original rubber lines" and minimize line expansion under pressure for a firmer, more consistent pedal. They won't fix boiled fluid or pad fade, so do those upgrades first.

Do braided brake lines make a difference?

They make a difference in pedal feel and consistency. Wilwood describes the result as "improved pedal firmness, quicker response, and greater overall control during braking." Braided lines don't add friction, so they don't change stopping power by themselves. That comes from pads, tires and fluid that can take the heat.

Do I need to bleed brakes after installing stainless lines?

Yes. Replacing hoses opens the hydraulic system and lets air in, so a full bleed is part of the install. It's a good time to flush in a high-temperature brake fluid at the same time. Pressure-check every fitting for leaks and confirm a firm pedal before driving the car.

Can I use Teflon tape on brake line fittings?

Only where Wilwood calls for it. Wilwood says PTFE thread sealing tape must be used on tapered NPT pipe threads, like the inlet on many Wilwood calipers. AN fittings seal on a 37° flare and need no sealant. Banjo fittings seal with two copper crush washers. Don't put tape on flare or banjo joints.

Will Wilwood Flexline kits fit my factory calipers?

Some will and some won't. Wilwood offers OEM Factory Replacement Flexline Kits that are direct-fit replacements for factory brake systems. Many other Wilwood kits are built for Wilwood calipers, and the TRP listing usually names the caliper in the title. Check the title and fitment, or text us your car and caliper.

How long do stainless steel brake lines last?

Wilwood doesn't publish a lifespan, so we won't give you one. Inspect lines at every brake service and before each event: look for chafing, kinks, damaged covers, leaks at fittings or a braid that's frayed. Replace any line that shows damage. The PVC cover on Wilwood's OEM replacement kits is there to protect against abrasion.

Shop Wilwood Flexline Kits at Track Ready Products

Browse Wilwood braided brake line kits by vehicle, or text us your car and caliper setup at (949) 954-3322 and we'll help you find the right kit.

          Browse brake line kits
          Browse Wilwood
          Browse brake fluid
          Browse racing pads

Navigation

            Back to the Garage home

        Shop brake line kits

At a Glance

ChangesPedal feel and consistency

Doesn't fixBoiled fluid, pad fade

Banjo torque96–120 in-lbs (Wilwood)

Upgrade orderFluid → pads → lines

In This Article

What a Hose Does

Rubber vs Stainless

What Wilwood Says

What Lines Can't Fix

Side-by-Side

Install and Bleeding

Who Should Upgrade

FAQ

Related Articles

Track Guide

Best Brake Fluid for Track Days

How-To

How to Bed In Track Brake Pads

Comparison

PowerStop Track Day vs Track Day SPEC

Track Guide

              HPDE Tech Inspection Checklist

Stainless steel brake lines vs rubber is one of the most common brake questions from track-day drivers, usually right after the first event, when the pedal felt longer or less consistent than it does on the street.
