The engine looks happy, the coolant gauge is in the middle, and the gearbox is the thing asking for a break. Search "dct cooler" and the suggestions tell the story: F80, S55, E92 M3, "csf dct oil cooler." Drivers of dual-clutch BMWs find this out on their own, usually in the second hot run group of the day.

This guide covers what a DCT cooler protects, how to tell whether you need one, what CSF actually publishes for the coolers we carry, and the fitment traps that catch people ordering by chassis code. It is the transmission-side sequel to our oil cooler for track days guide. Every sizing figure below comes from CSF's own product pages, and every fluid note comes from Motul's data sheet or your car maker's manual.

Shop CSF transmission coolers at Track Ready Products: application-specific CSF DCT and transmission oil coolers for BMW M cars and the GR Supra. Browse transmission coolers · Browse CSF

Engine Oil Cooler vs DCT Cooler: Two Different Loops

Your car can have three separate heat problems on track, and each one has its own cooler. Coolant runs through the radiator. Engine oil runs through the engine oil cooler. Transmission fluid runs through its own cooler, which on BMW M cars with a dual-clutch gearbox sits in the front cooling stack.

Upgrading one of those loops does nothing for the others. A bigger radiator lowers coolant temperature. A CSF engine oil cooler lowers engine oil temperature. Neither one touches the fluid inside the gearbox. That is why the round 3 oil cooler post kept DCT coolers to a single line: the engine oil test numbers CSF publishes (like the F87 M2 #8104 hot-weather test) are about engine oil, and you should not read them as DCT numbers.

The DCT side matters because a dual-clutch gearbox runs its clutches in the same fluid that lubricates the gears. A long session with constant hard shifts, high RPM and little airflow at the slow corners puts steady heat into that fluid, and the factory cooler was sized for road use.

Symptoms: Warnings, Limp Mode and Lazy Shifts

DCT heat usually shows up in one of three ways:

A transmission temperature warning on the dash, often late in a session or on the second hot session of the day.

Reduced performance or limp behavior where the car protects the gearbox by limiting power or shift behavior.

Shifts that feel slower or less crisp as the session goes on. CSF describes this on its G8X and Supra cooler pages: as fluid passes optimal temperatures, shifting gets sluggish, and the damage can build slowly before drivers notice.

The honest first step is data, not parts. Many cars let you read transmission fluid temperature with a scan tool or a logging app. Log a full session on a warm day so you know what you are actually fixing. If transmission temps climb steadily while engine oil and coolant stay put, the DCT loop is your bottleneck.

Also rule out the boring causes first: old fluid, a blocked or bent cooler core, missing seals around the cooling stack, or debris packed into the front of the car. A new cooler will not fix fluid that is long past its service interval.

What CSF Publishes for Its DCT and Transmission Coolers

CSF builds its transmission coolers with what it calls AC condenser technology: multi-channel microtubes instead of a traditional tube-and-fin core. It does not reset fluid that has already done a lot of hot laps. On a dual-clutch box, fluid condition affects clutch engagement and shift feel, so a fluid service is often the cheapest first fix and the right companion to a new cooler.

We stock Motul DCT fluids in the gear oils category, including Motul High Performance DCT Fluid. Motul's data sheet for its High Torque DCTF describes a 100% synthetic ester fluid for racing, tuned and high-power road cars with wet dual-clutch gearboxes, and lists BMW DCTF-1, DCTF-1+ and DCTF-2 among its specifications. The same sheet is clear that it is not for conventional automatics, CVTs or dry DCTs.

On change intervals, we are not going to invent a number. Motul's data sheet says to change it according to the manufacturer's recommendations and adapt to your own use, and to check the owner's manual first. In practice that means: start from BMW's or Toyota's interval, then shorten it if your car sees regular hot track days, and keep a log so you can see whether temps and shift quality change after a service.

Never open a hot transmission or cooling system in the paddock. Transmission fluid at track temperature can cause serious burns. Let the car cool fully, and follow the vehicle maker's fill and level-check procedure. Many DCTs check level at a specified fluid temperature with the engine running, so guessing the fill is how people end up over- or under-filled.

Fitment Traps: E9X vs F8X vs G8X and the A90 Supra

Chassis codes are where DCT cooler orders go wrong. A few things to check before you buy:

F87 M2 has two different coolers

The original 2016–2018 M2 (N55) uses CSF #8103. The 2019–2021 M2 Competition (S55) shares the F8X M3/M4 cooler, CSF #8081. Same chassis code, different part.

G8X is not a DCT car

CSF's #8221 page describes it as a cooler for the ZF8 automatic in the G8X M2/M3/M4. It is a transmission cooler, but not a dual-clutch one, so DCT fluid advice does not carry over. Motul's High Torque DCTF data sheet specifically excludes conventional automatics.

The Supra cooler is named two ways

TRP's listing title calls the Supra part a "DCT transmission oil cooler." CSF's own #8183 page calls it a transmission cooler and talks about "your automatic transmission." Go by your car's actual gearbox, and use the fluid your car maker specifies.

Late G-series B58 cars

CSF warns that #8183 will not fit late-production 2024 and 2025+ G2X M340i and M440i models with the updated B58 engine, and says BMW changed the cooler part number for 2025. CSF tells owners to physically check the OE cooler part number or ask a BMW dealer with the VIN.

E9X M3 DCT vs 6-speed

CSF #8042 fits both, but does a different job in each: transmission cooler on the DCT car, engine oil cooler on the manual car.

Which Drivers Should Buy a DCT Cooler Now

Log and service first (no cooler yet) if:

You run occasional HPDE and transmission temps stay out of warning territory

You have no transmission temperature data yet

Your DCT fluid is overdue or the service history is unknown

Warnings only show up in the pits or in traffic

Buy a CSF drop-in DCT cooler if:

You run regular HPDE or time trial and transmission temps climb every session

Shifts get lazy late in sessions on hot days

CSF lists a drop-in cooler for your exact model and gearbox

Engine oil and coolant are already under control

Plan a full cooling package if:

You run endurance stints, long open sessions or significant added power

Oil, coolant and transmission temps all climb together

You also need a CSF heat exchanger, radiator or engine oil cooler in the same stack

If you're in between: service the fluid, fix any missing seals or debris in the cooling stack, then log one more hot session. Many dual-clutch cars handle short HPDE sessions on the factory cooler, especially on cooler days. If you log transmission temperature and it climbs steadily every session, triggers warnings, or shift quality fades late in the session while engine oil and coolant look normal, a DCT oil cooler is the right fix. If you have no data, log a hot session before spending money.

What's the difference between a DCT cooler and an engine oil cooler?

They cool different fluids. An engine oil cooler handles the oil in the engine. A DCT cooler handles the fluid inside the dual-clutch gearbox, which also runs the clutches. On BMW M cars they are separate parts in the front cooling stack. CSF's E9X M3 cooler (#8042) is the unusual one: it is a transmission cooler on the DCT car and an engine oil cooler on the manual car.

Will a bigger radiator fix DCT heat?

No. A radiator cools engine coolant. It may help a little if your whole cooling stack is heat-soaked, but it does not cool transmission fluid. If transmission temps are the number climbing, the fix is the transmission cooler, fluid condition and airflow through the front of the car. Use the symptom table above to match the hot number to the right loop.

Is a CSF DCT cooler worth it?

For cars that hit transmission heat limits on track, CSF's coolers are a straightforward upgrade. CSF publishes the construction details: 10 tubes versus 6 on the F8X cooler, lab-tested at about 30% more efficient than OEM, and drop-in fit with factory lines and brackets. If your temps never climb, spend the money on tires, pads or fluid first.

What fluid should I use with a DCT cooler?

Use a fluid that meets your car maker's specification for your gearbox. Motul's High Torque DCTF data sheet lists BMW DCTF-1, DCTF-1+ and DCTF-2 among its specs and says it is for wet dual-clutch gearboxes only, not conventional automatics, CVTs or dry DCTs. A cooler swap is a good time to service the fluid, using the maker's fill procedure.

Can I drive a CSF DCT cooler on the street?

Yes. CSF designs these as drop-in replacements for the factory cooler, using the OEM lines, brackets and seals, and markets them for cars driven hard "on the street or track." There is no race-only setup involved. After install, check for leaks, set the fluid level by the maker's procedure, and keep an eye on temps during your first track day.

Shop CSF DCT and Transmission Coolers at Track Ready Products

Shop CSF DCT and transmission coolers by vehicle, or text us your car and your transmission temp logs at (949) 954-3322 and we will help you figure out which loop is running hot.

          Browse transmission coolers
          Browse CSF
Browse gear oils and DCT fluid

Navigation

Back to the CSF radiators hub

        Shop transmission coolers

At a Glance

First stepLog trans temp

F8X CSF cooler10 vs 6 tubes

CSF lab claim~30% vs OEM

G8X gearboxZF8 auto (not DCT)

In This Article

Engine vs DCT Cooler

Symptoms

CSF Coolers

Side-by-Side

DCT Fluid

Fitment Traps

Which to Buy

FAQ

Related Articles

Tech Guide

Do You Need an Oil Cooler for Track Days?

Tech Guide

Why Your Car Overheats on Track

Brand Overview

              CSF Radiators Explained

Comparison

              CSF Race vs OE Replacement

A DCT oil cooler is the part people start pricing after the second session that ends with a transmission temperature warning.
