The pedal feels fine, then goes long and soft mid-session. Pads get the blame, but more often it's the fluid. The factory fill in most street cars was never meant for lap after lap of hard stops, and it has usually been absorbing moisture for years.

This guide explains dry and wet boiling points and DOT ratings, then compares Motul RBF 600, 660 and 700 with the Brembo, Wilwood and EBC fluids we carry. Every boiling point comes from the fluid maker's own page or data sheet. If the fluid boils, it forms vapor bubbles. Liquid barely compresses, but vapor does, so the pedal travels further before the pads clamp. That's the long, soft pedal drivers call fade, and it can arrive with little warning.

Two numbers describe how much heat a fluid can take:

Dry boiling point is the boiling point of fresh fluid straight from a sealed bottle.

Wet boiling point is the boiling point after the fluid has absorbed a set amount of water. Motul measures its wet figure after adding 3% water, and its RBF 660 data sheet says that represents the fluid's condition after about one year of use.

Glycol-based fluids (DOT 3, DOT 4 and DOT 5.1) absorb moisture, and Wilwood says "over time the boiling point is gradually reduced." The dry figure is the best the fluid will ever be. The wet figure is closer to what fluid that's been in the car a while can handle.

A high dry boiling point doesn't last. Once a bottle is opened, the fluid starts absorbing moisture. Castrol's Canadian data sheet says it exceeds FMVSS 116 DOT 3 and DOT 4 and lists a dry equilibrium reflux boiling point of 320°C (608°F) and a wet figure of 270°C (518°F). Castrol's Canadian product page quotes the dry boiling point as 325°C (617°F).

That wet number is much higher than the glycol fluids above. Castrol credits a "unique silicon ester technology" that "absorbs less water than conventional glycol ether fluids," and says SRF should be used for no more than eighteen months before draining and refilling. Don't confuse that with silicone DOT 5: SRF is rated DOT 3 and DOT 4, and Castrol's data sheet says it's miscible with conventional DOT 3 and DOT 4 fluids. SRF isn't part of our brake fluid lineup, so we can't quote you a price.

How Often to Change Brake Fluid on a Track Car

There's no single right interval. For race or track driven cars it can be beneficial to change the fluid after every race weekend, especially after racing in the rain, severe temperature use, or brake fluid boiling."

Wilwood (EXP flyer): "In extreme service, best performance is realized by flushing and filling the system with fresh fluid immediately before competition. Brembo recommends completely emptying the old fluid before switching to LCF 600 Plus.

Before each event: bleed each caliper until the fluid runs clean and bubble-free.

After a session where the pedal went long: assume the fluid boiled. Bleed before going back out.

Regardless of track time: flush within the maker's time limit, such as 12 months for Wilwood EXP.

If the pedal feels the same at the end of the day as in the morning, your interval and your brake fluid for track days are both doing their job. If it gets longer, bleed more often or step up in dry boiling point.

Pads, Fluid and Rotors Work as a System

A track pad that keeps biting at higher temperatures also lets the caliper and fluid get hotter. A pad upgrade without a fluid upgrade often just moves the weak link: the pads hold on and the fluid boils.

Running PowerStop pads? If you bleed before every event and have never had a long pedal on RBF 600, the extra 23°F may never come into play. If you're boiling RBF 600 late in sessions on sticky tires or in a heavy car, RBF 660 is the logical next step.

What brake fluid do I need for my first track day?

A fresh, full flush of a quality high-temperature DOT 4 matters more than the brand. Old, moisture-laden factory fluid often causes a soft pedal at a first event. Motul RBF 600 and Wilwood EXP 600 Plus both suit a street car that's driven to the track. Flush a week before the event so you can check for leaks. Our Preparing for Track Day guide covers the rest of the checklist.

Can I mix brake fluid brands?

Within the same chemistry, some makers allow it. Wilwood says EXP 600 Plus is "fully miscible with all other DOT 3 and 4 rated racing fluids." Brembo says LCF 600 Plus can be mixed with other racing DOT 3 and DOT 4 fluids, but recommends emptying the system completely. EBC says not to mix BF307+ with other fluids. Motul's data sheets say to avoid mixing RBF 660 with lower-performance polyglycol fluids and to avoid mixing RBF 700 with polyglycol fluids at all. A full flush gives you the boiling point on the bottle.

How often should I bleed brakes for track days?

Many track drivers bleed before every event. Wilwood says that for race or track cars "it can be beneficial to change the fluid after every race weekend," especially after rain, severe heat or boiling the fluid. If your pedal went long during a session, bleed before you go back out. Beyond that, let pedal feel and session count set the schedule.

Is DOT 5.1 the same as DOT 5?

No. DOT 5.1 is a glycol-based fluid like DOT 3 and DOT 4, and Motul's data sheets describe it as "non-silicone base." DOT 5 is silicone-based. Wilwood warns that DOT 5 is not compatible with glycol-based DOT 3, DOT 4 or DOT 5.1 fluids and "will turn to gel if mixed." Never add DOT 5 to a glycol system. If your car specifies DOT 5.1, note that Motul says RBF 660 exceeds DOT 5.1 requirements except for viscosity at -40°F (-40°C). Low-temperature viscosity is what DOT 5.1 adds for ABS and stability systems, so check your owner's manual before switching.

Can I daily-drive on racing brake fluid?

Read the label. Motul says RBF 700 meets DOT 4 and can be used "for everyday use road applications," and EBC markets BF307+ for "fast street use" as well as track days. Brembo LCF 600 Plus is the opposite: Brembo says it's "not suitable for use in vehicles travelling on public roads or motorways." Either way, the same moisture rules apply, so flush on schedule.

Shop Track Brake Fluid at Track Ready Products

Shop track brake fluid, or text us your car, pads and run group at (949) 954-3322 and we'll recommend a fluid and bleed schedule.

Browse our track brake fluid selection
          Shop racing brake pads
          Shop PowerStop brakes

Navigation

Back to the PowerStop brakes hub

        Shop brake fluid

At a Glance

Best all-rounderMotul RBF 600 (594°F dry)

Highest dry boiling pointMotul RBF 700 (637°F dry)

Lowest bottle price, 590°F+ dryWilwood EXP 600 Plus ($26.53 / 500 ml)

Bleed intervalBefore each event; flush after any boil

In This Article

Why Fluid Fades

DOT Ratings

RBF 600 vs 660 vs 700

Brembo, Wilwood & EBC

Castrol SRF

Bleed & Flush

Pads, Fluid & Rotors

FAQ

Related Articles

Comparison

PowerStop Track Day vs Track Day SPEC

Track Guide

Street Car to Track Car: The Real Order of Operations

How-To

              Preparing for Track Day

Brand Overview

How PowerStop Brake Kits Are Built

Choosing brake fluid for track days comes down to one problem: fluid that boils.
